It irks me that people assume they can wander around a cube farm speaking loudly, yelling to others because they can see them, and generally acting as if we’re in a big party instead of an office. I try to use my library voice when I’m in cube farms as much as possible. (I should note that this was not a problem when I was in a primarily engineering area. This seems to be a symptom of the non-technical environment.)
Thanks to the nature of my job, I’m often on calls with people outside our company, and it’s not pleasant to have to explain the background noise to them. I wish there was a way to politely warn people to keep it down. Unfortunately, if I’m the only one to hang a big “BE QUIET” (or whatever) sign outside my cube, I’ll just come off as the office curmudgeon.
