I just finished setting up a WRT54Gv8 router with DD-WRT, which rocks. I boosted my transmit power. So far, I haven’t done anything else, but this will be my new toy for awhile. Also, we “upgraded” (and I use the term very loosely) to a 6MB connection with Combastards, so we’re testing that out, too. So far, the upload speed seems to have (roughly) tripled and the download speed has nearly quadrupled.
And in case anyone gets here via Google, to put DD-WRT on my WRT54G v8, I followed the instructions on the first post of this thread precisely, and I didn’t have a bit of trouble with it.
Some general advice for if you’re replacing an existing router with a DD-WRT capable router (as I was):
* Just plug the new router into a spare laptop while you’re flashing it. That way, you can switch over to the already-working router (via wireless) as needed if you find that you need a file or help.
* If you do the above step, then don’t bother putting in any configuration for the router before doing the full swap. Or if you do, back it up to a file and move the file to a flash drive before you swap the routers. You may lose the config during the swap process.
* After you have DD-WRT working and you swap the routers, don’t plug in your internet connection yet. Get an IP on the hard-wired computer first.
* Once you have a local IP and have successfully loaded up the DD-WRT web config page, then plug in your internet and do a renew. It should be good to go at this point.
